US Client Visits GNEE to Evaluate L80 BTC SMLS Casing Pipe for Onshore Gas Project

Recently, a drilling engineering and procurement delegation from the United States visited GNEE (Global New Energy & Equipment) for an on-site technical evaluation of API 5CT L80 BTC seamless casing pipes, intended for an upcoming onshore gas field development project.

The visit focused on supplier qualification review, manufacturing capability assessment, and technical verification of casing performance for moderate-depth wells with potential sour service considerations.

Project Background: Casing Requirement for Gas Well Development

The client is currently involved in the planning phase of an onshore gas field development project in North America, where casing integrity and connection reliability are critical for safe drilling operations.

According to preliminary well design requirements, the casing system must meet the following conditions:

  • API 5CT L80 steel grade casing for moderate-strength applications
  • BTC (Buttress Thread & Casing) connection for field-proven make-up performance
  • Seamless (SMLS) manufacturing process for uniform mechanical properties
  • API 5CT PSL2 level quality control for enhanced inspection and traceability
  • Compatibility with downhole completion tools and drift requirements

The client emphasized the importance of maintaining casing integrity under complex downhole loading conditions, particularly in sections where pressure and corrosion risk may increase.

Technical Discussion at GNEE

During the technical meeting, GNEE’s engineering team discussed the applicability of L80 casing for the proposed well conditions, including:

1. Material Selection for Moderate Sour Conditions

The team explained that L80 casing may be applied in sour service environments only when it complies with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements and project-specific corrosion resistance evaluation criteria.

2. BTC Thread Performance

BTC connection samples were reviewed and discussed in terms of:

  • Make-up reliability under field torque conditions
  • Resistance to galling during repeated assembly
  • Suitability for vertical and deviated well sections

It was clarified that BTC is a mechanical connection system and does not itself define corrosion resistance performance.

3. Seamless Pipe Manufacturing Process

The client reviewed GNEE’s seamless casing production workflow, including:

  • Hot piercing and hot rolling process
  • Quenching and tempering heat treatment (for L80 grade)
  • Full-length ultrasonic testing (UT)
  • Hydrostatic pressure testing
  • Thread machining and gauging inspection

Quality Control and Inspection Capability Review

The delegation also inspected GNEE’s quality control facilities, focusing on:

  • Spectrometer-based chemical composition analysis
  • Ultrasonic and eddy current NDT inspection systems
  • Hydrostatic testing equipment for pressure verification
  • BTC thread gauging and dimensional inspection tools
  • Heat number traceability and production record system

The client paid particular attention to traceability from raw material to finished casing pipe, which is critical for international oil and gas procurement projects.

Preliminary Procurement Requirements

Based on discussions during the visit, the client’s preliminary technical requirements include:

  • Product: API 5CT L80 casing pipe
  • Connection: BTC (Buttress Thread & Casing)
  • Manufacturing: Seamless (SMLS)
  • Specification level: API 5CT PSL2
  • Application: Onshore gas field development well sections
  • Additional requirements: Drift and dimensional compatibility with completion tools

The client also requested follow-up technical clarification regarding lead time, inspection options (SGS/BV third-party witness), and order batch planning.

Client Technical Feedback

After the factory visit and technical exchange, the client noted that GNEE demonstrated:

  • Solid understanding of API 5CT casing manufacturing standards
  • Proper technical interpretation of BTC connection application scope
  • Stable quality control and inspection systems aligned with API requirements
  • Capability to support project-based technical communication for OCTG supply

The project is currently under technical evaluation stage, and GNEE will continue to provide documentation and engineering support for further procurement review.

Conclusion

This visit strengthened technical communication between GNEE and the US-based procurement team in the oil and gas sector. The discussion focused on API 5CT L80 casing applicability for onshore gas development projects and confirmed the importance of proper material selection, connection reliability, and quality assurance in casing procurement decisions.

GNEE continues to support global oil and gas clients with API 5CT casing solutions including J55, K55, N80, L80, P110 grades, BTC/LTC/STC connections, and seamless pipe manufacturing capabilities for various drilling environments.
