SA179 is not a steel grade but a specification: ASTM A179 / ASME SA179 covers seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes with 0.06–0.18 % carbon and 0.27–0.63 % manganese, made from killed steel and heat treated after the final draw. The material is plain carbon steel — not alloy, not stainless — supplied from 1/8 in to 3 in (3.2 mm to 76.2 mm) outside diameter with a maximum hardness of 72 HRBW. Three things decide whether it suits a job: the service temperature, the corrosiveness of the medium, and whether an ASME Code construction requires the SA designation.
