Flanges are fittings used to connect and seal pipelines, providing structural fixation through their joint and sealing functions.

I. What is a Flange?
A flange is a pipe-connecting component, typically comprising two disks and bolts, used to join pipelines, valves, or equipment. It can connect two ends of the same pipeline or interfaces of different pipelines.

II. Functions of Flanges
The primary role of flanges is to interconnect pipelines, enabling fluid transfer while ensuring leak-proof connections. Additional functions include:

  1. Enhancing reliability and safety of pipeline systems;
  2. Facilitating easier disassembly, maintenance, and repairs;
  3. Allowing rapid disassembly for leak remediation or part replacement.

III. Classification of Flanges
Based on different standards, flanges are categorized as follows:

  1. By manufacturing process‌: Forged flanges, die-forged flanges, machined flanges, cast flanges;
  2. By material‌: Steel flanges, stainless steel flanges, cast iron flanges, plastic flanges;
  3. By connection type‌: Weld neck flanges, threaded flanges, lapping joint flanges;
  4. By pressure rating‌: PN6, PN10, PN16, PN25, PN40.

IV. Common Applications

  1. Pipe connections and sealing in plumbing systems;
  2. Cooling water and lubricant pipeline connections in the power industry;
  3. Transport pipeline connections in petrochemical industries;
  4. Corrosion-resistant pipeline connections in chemical processing;
  5. Pipe connections in construction, water supply, and drainage systems.
